The remaining ten teams retrace their route to Quito to catch a flight to Santiago, Chile, the next step on their race to the finish.
At the airport, two teams think they can get ahead of the others by taking a flight first to Quayaquil, then a connecting flight to Santiago, while the others take the LAN flight via Lima, to Santiago.
Expecting to arrive ahead of the others, the two teams are delayed and land in Santiago a few minutes after the other eight teams.
In Santiago, in the middle of the night, the teams are instructed to go to the headquarters of CODELCO, Chile's national copper company, to solve a puzzle. They enter the boardroom, lavishly paneled in copper sheets, to find letter clues on various objects. Around the room are photos of CODELCO mines.
Personal Note: At this point of the race, I guessed the next stop, the open pit copper mine at Chuquicamata, where I lived, many years ago. I was right.
As the teams studied the photos, put the letters together to spell out Chuquicamata (not an easy thing!) they received their next instructions.
