Colonia del Sacramento was the only Portuguese settlement along the Rio de la Plata and thus the historic portion of Colonia is reminiscent of old Lisbon. Across the Rio de la Plata from Argentina, this the main water thoroughfare for visitors from Argentina to access any part of Uruguay, a a choice destination on its own.
