Flan de Naranja - Orange Custard

By Bonnie Hamre, About.com

Adding fruit to a custard dish is one way of enjoying the fruits of South America. This recipe uses oranges, but any fruit in season, or even frozen, works.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pint milk, warmed
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 oranges
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • cinnamon to taste

Preparation:

Warm the milk in a saucepan. Mix the sugar, cornstarch and eggs in a bowl. Gradually mix in the hot milk. Return the mix to the saucepan and cook, stirring frequently until the mix forms a custard.

Peel the orange and separate into sections, placing the orange pieces in the bottoms of custard bowls. Sprinkle more sugar over the fruit, then add the custard. Sprinkle cinnamon to taste over the custard and refrigerate until cool before serving. If desired, add a dollop of whipped cream.

Other fruit, fresh or frozen works well, too.

You can use a custard mix, such as Bird's, for a smooth, tasty custard.
