Devil's Island of French Guiana

Devil's Island, Île du Diable, is the smallest island of the three Îles du Salut located off the coast of French Guiana, but gave its name to the infamous penal colony closed in 1946. Tours, photos and information about the islands.

The three άes du Salut (Islands of Salvation or Health), off the coast of French Guiana are lush, tropical isles of abundant foliage, great views and open to visitors. Once however, they were the site of the infamous Devil's Island penal colony, called the Green Hell. άe Royale is now a resort destination for visitors to French Guiana.

It was published in 1970, 25 years after the events of the book" in which he details his imprisonment from when he was convicted of "murder in France and sentenced to a life of hard labor in the French Guiana penal colony, to when he was released from a Venezuelan prison, free of French justice."
