Earthquakes and South America
Over one million earthquakes happen worldwide every year. Some are so slight they are unfelt, others last for minutes that seem like forever and can cause major changes in the landscape. Many of these earthquakes happen in South America, due to the Nazca and South American plates of the circum-Pacific belt. The world's largest earthquake, a 9.5, occurred in Chile in 1960.

Earthquakes
...about three inches of motion occurs between the Nazca and South American plates each year, and is divided three ways" - fueling volcanoes, "squeezing South America, and is released every hundred years or so in great earthquakes. About a third of an inch crumples South America permanently, building the Andes."

Ring of Fire
Geography Guide Matt Rosenberg writes: "The "Ring of Fire" is an arc stretching from New Zealand, along the eastern edge of Asia, north across the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and south along the coast of North and South America. It is composed over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes."

Volcanoes and Earthquakes - Disaster Prevention in Latin America:
From IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology) - "Policy recommendations are in the areas of prevention of casualties (through education and use of the media) and reaction to eruptions (using civil defense measures). Researchers identified volcanoes that pose the greatest risk and have evaluated existing volcanic maps. "

What is an Earthquake?
"An earthquake is a trembling or shaking movement of the Earth's surface. Earthquakes normally result from the movement of faults, quasi-planar zones of deformation within its uppermost layers. Basically earths's tectonic plates shift every so often, and the areas on the fault lines are the ones that feel it's results." Maps, figures, photos.
