The Mercado Sur, in the southern section, is attributed to Gustave Eiffel and erected in the early 1900's and decorated with ornate iron work.
Nearby is the Club de la Unión, Olmedo Plaza with its monument of José Joaquín de Olmedo, a famous poet from Guayaquil and a XIX president of Ecuador, and the Bahía Malecon Shopping Center, with its terrace of restaurants and spectacular views of the Guayas River.
