North of La Serena in Chile's IV Region in the Norte Chico, the small fishing village of Los Choros attracts fishing and sports enthusiasts as well as wildlife viewers who come to see the colonies of bottle-nosed dolphins, chungungos (sea otters) and Humboldt penguins on the Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt. Enjoy a day tour of Los Choros on a wintry day.
It's an easy drive from Santiago. Follow the route from La Serena north, then beyond La Higuera, turn west at Trapiche for Choros Bajos and Punta Choros.
In the summer, this is a favorite spot for wind surfing, fishing, scuaba diving and other aquatic sports, but not swimming: the water is cold and the surf rough. In winter, the weather may be inclement, but the natural beauty invites visitors.
