Beachgoers in Rio aren't afraid to display their bodies. Bathing attire ranges from the skimpiest thong to more modest suits, but near nudity is the norm. However, nude bathing in Rio is frowned upon.

It was only in October, 2003, after a decade's debate, Rio authorities approved a nudist beach in Abrico in western Rio de Janeiro.

The beach is a way of life. Food vendors operate stands or walk the beaches with their wares, often customized for their clients preferences. Since Rio residents, called cariocas, usually gather at a preferred beach on a regular basis, the vendors know what to sell, from sun lotion by the squirt, rental sunglasses for the day, or food and beverages, beachgoers can get anything they want.
