This view of Sugarloaf mountain jutting out into Guanabara Bay serves as a dividing point in Rio's famed beaches. The praias, or beaches, each have their own attractions, and all have fervent supporters.

To the right, or north, Flamengo beach is seen clearly.

To the soutth, around the curve and not clearly seen here, are the beaches of Botafogo, Leme, Copacabana, Arpoador, Ipanema, Lebon, Vidigal, Pepino and Barra da Tijuca.

Going to the beach is a way of life in Rio. Social connections, sports, evetns and people watching are a routine of daily life. Some of the beaches are busier than others, some attract a particular group of people.
