Lago Puelo in Parque Nacional Lago Puelo is 14 km south of El Bolsón and a favorite spot for water sports, camping and fishing. Unlike other Patagonian lakes created from glacier melt, the water of Lake Puelo warms enough in summer for swimming.
Around the lake, stands of pataguas or pitras trees dot the hillsides. The unusually large size of these trees adds to the scenic splendor.
Upper Lake Puelo has a surface of 4,595 hectares and is fed by Azul, Epuyén and Turbio Rivers. Río Azul is aptly named, descending from the glacier, or Hielo Azul, where you can hike, camp and traverse the river.
