Seen from one of the two mountains enclosing the city within the fertile Valle de Lerma, Salta is the capital of the province of Salta. At 1187 m above sea level, Salta enjoys a mild climate.
The city retains much of its colonial heritage in its buildings and streets. Easily reached by land or air from other cities in Argentina, Salta beckons the visitors for its own attractions and those in the nearby area.
There are sporting activities such as fishing, rafting on the Juramento river, paragliding, birdwatching and walking through the Salta rainforest called Nevado de Acay.
