Salta, the capital of the province of Salta, is a colonial city, built in an area already in use long before the Spaniards arrived. This northwestern region of Argentina witnessed the beginnings of permanent agricultural civilization by several tribes, including the Diaguita who successfully kept the Inca empire from spreading over the Andes.
Tren a los Nubes - the Train to the Clouds. As of September 2008, the train is still out of operation
Cachi - reached by road through forests, high altitude cactus stands and an awe-inspiring road
Humahuaca and Purmamarca - fantastic scenery and rock formations
Cafayate - wine producing area
Quilmes and Santa Rosa de Tastil - archaeological ruins
Before the coastal areas were developed by the Spaniards, this was the most heavily populated region of what is now modern Argentina. The passes through the Andes were well used by local traders. Several archaeological sites are on the tourist trail.
