Sewell, Chile: The Escala Larga

From , former About.com Guide

Sewell 1960 Escala Larga

Sewell 1960 Escala Larga

Bill Glover
The escala larga, seen here in 1960, began at the railroad station, climbed up past shops and commercial buildings, administrative offices, the theater and guest house, up again to camarotes and on to the top of the camp. This and other staircases gave Sewell the name "City of Staircases."

Note the extensive use of rock and concrete retaining walls to hold back the mountain.
