This episode isn't new happenings, but a look back at the castaways and their first 13 days on Exile Island, including some footage that wasn't included in the episodes aired to date.
The footage clarifies some of the castaways' actions and strategies, and makes you wonder what other interesting shots of the castaways in action are edited out of the final episode. During this show, there are some excellent views of local wildife: iguanas, snakes and monkeys, see page 2.
As expected, this viewing recaps the highlights from of the Survivors' initial landing on Exile Island, and their previous grouping into four tribes, Castaways and Environment according to age and gender. Quickly assuming the leadership role of the older woman's Casaya tribe, Tina Scheer got a fire going and a shelter underway.
Not seen in this episode: Tina found an oyster bed, devoured some and, loving oysters, decided to keep them all to herself. It wasn't this, but her perceived stand-offish behavior as she moved away from the group to grieve for her son's recent death, that got her voted out at the first Tribal Council.
In the younger women's Bayoneta camp, the four women tried to open a coconut with a machete. One mentioned she thought they'd have men around to do the hard stuff, but Sally Schumann took the machete and maanged to slice open the coconut, revealing she'd done construction work. The women also questioned Misty Giles , the first castaway to be sent to Exile Island. She pretended she'd found the Hidden Idol, resembling a shrunken head, but that didn't save her from being voted out.
During a fierce lightening and rainstorm that pelted the tribes, Bruce Kanegai angered his Viveros tribemates by using some of their half bottle of fresh water to wash his hands. The others pointed out he could have used the sea or rainwater, but Bruce paid no attention. During this same storm, the women of Bayoneta huddled together and sang songs, bonding in their misery.
Dehydrated and thirsty, Cirie Fields and the other Casaya women licked rain water from leaves.
After the four tribes were reformed into two, {b]Casaya and La Mina, and Shane Powers who was enduring an abrupt quit smoking experience, began the first of his rants.
Not seen in this episode: Cirie of the new Casaya tribe comments that the others are the "sickest, most aggravating people" while Shane says they act like "7th grade girls," and Bobby Mason feels excluded from the group. However, Aras Baskauskas had the tribemates screaming out their negative thoughts and building teamspirit. He would be the team leader at challenges.
Hungry, the Casayas spot and kill a snake to eat. Courtney Marit baffles the others with her talk of a snake meaning transformation, yet they all toast the snake as they eat it and Courtney thanks it for its life.
When the Casayas learn that it is Shane's son's birthday, they all sing him the birthday song, which makes Shane feel a little bit better. he regrets leaving his son.
While Terry Deitz is on Exile Island, Austin Carty gets to know Sally better as she reveals some of the unhappy events of her past. It is this new awareness and understanding, along with Sally's physical abilities that lead Austin to campaign for her when it's either her or Ruth Marie Milliman who are next to be voted out. Sally stays.
On Day 12 in the Casaya camp, while Bobby sleeps in the shelter, while Cirie and Courtney make a fire. Upset that he sleeps while others work, the women talk about it. Cirie wakes him up and a sleepy and grumpy Bobby gets up to help with the fire. He pretends ignorance of fire making, while Courtney gives instructions. Finally, she's so frustrated that she takes over for him and Bobby goes back to sleep. Later, after bathing with their reward bathroom soap, Courtney and Danielle DiLorenzo inform the rest of the tribe that there is "girl soap" and "boy soap," following which Shane makes a rude action. When they win the combination Reward and Immunity Challenge, Cirie wishes they had lost so they could vote Shane out.
Did you notice that most of the unseen footage deals with the dysfunctional Casaya tribe? However, for all their battling and sniping at each other, they manage to pull together and win the Rewards and Challenges that brought them food and amenities.
The La Mina tribe, weakened by the lack of food and team members, has a tough time ahead.
Don't forget to watch the next episode when more bad weather, rough competitions and a medical emergency add troubles to Survivor 12: Exile Island.
