Survivor 11: Guatemala - Episode 2

Man Down!

By Bonnie Hamre, About.com

With the men of Nakúm tribe ailing from dehydration and exhaustion, not a good start to 39 days of grueling conditions, and ex-fire chief Jim Lynch suffering an injury and being sent home, the women of Nakum are probably wondering why they need men on their tribe. Even Bobby-Jon, with his previous Survivor experience, is not well, and you'd think he'd know better to over exert himself the first few days.

Margaret has put her family nurse practitioner training and expertise to good use, marking her as a valuable tribe member from the get go.

Let's see what happens with this episode!

Episode 2 begins with Nakúm tribe returning to camp after the first Tribal Council. They are dispirited, with Bobby-Jon saying he feels like he’s paying rent at Tribal Council which has taken an emotional and physical toll on the tribe.

Day 4 begins with the Yaxha tribe members discussing Nakúm, citing the differences between them. Yaxha is upbeat about themselves, but Nakúm is too serious. Stephanie rejoices in a fun camp life, their good morale and the family-like feeling. Gary continues to keep quiet about his background.

Tree Mail brings the invitation to the Reward Challenge, Web over Water, which is a competitioin for fishing equipment: hooks, corks, worms, a fillet knife, and other items. The race involves retrieving 8 bags per tribe from a spider’s web over water. Any player who drops the bag or falls into the water before getting a bag has to start over again. Amy sits out for the Yaxha tribe. The first tribe to get all 8 bags wins reward. It’s a neck and neck race, with both teams tied until Rafe drops into the water and has a hard time getting out and back into the race. Nakúm pulls ahead, but Morgan makes up the time and the teams are tied at 5 bags. Brianna also falls and Nakúm pulls ahead again. It’s a dead heat until Blake, surprisingly revived after his earlier weakened state, makes an all out effort and wins the reward for Nakúm.

Day 5 begins at dawn with Nakúm fishing from their canoe, and bringing home a number of tiny fish. Blake is feeling better, but at Yaxha, the tribe is digging roots. Rafe is willing to try anything once and asks his team mates if they’d like ants or a grasshopper. Gary is willing to try, but Stephanie says she’ll stick with corn and water. Gary observes camp life and states that Morgan is not working. Everyone needs to work to keep the camp going. Lydia makes a cove at the water’s edge and catches 10 minnows, at least one apiece for her tribe, with the laughing comment that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

In Nakúm’s camp, all is not well with the players. Blake is resting, feeling ill again and vomiting. He can’t keep anything down, not even water, and can’t sleep. Judd, watching him, displays his resentment, and states that Blake does nothing and Margaret nutures him, making sure he rests, relaxes and drinks plenty of water. Brandon agrees, noting that while Blake is conserving energy, he’s got to “man up.” Judd wants to be the hero to his tribe at the next challenge.
