Reeds
The reeds are gathered and anchored to the shallow floor of the lake, then more reeds are "planted" to create the circumference of the island. Layer upon layer of dried reeds are placed on the growing surface. As the bottom layers rot, they are replaced with freshly dired reeds on top, thus creating a never ending cycle of maintenance.

The islands change shape and size as necessary. At one time, a young married couple would make their home on their own island attached to their parents' floating island.
