Residents wear layers of clothing, mostly woolen, to protect themselves from the cold, the wind, and the sun which at this altitude can burn fiercely. Many women still wear the distinctive derby type hat and full skirts.
Note, however, that the women are barefoot. When their husbands are away fishing, their wives are in charge of the house, and of the family business. They sell the family's handicrafts and barter fish for pototoes, rice and sugar.
In addition, many of the women are in charge of the community projects, such as education and health.
