Machu Picchu

Intihuatana

Clarence Fisk
Intihuatana is thought to be part of an astronomical observatory. On March 21 and again on Seeptember 21, the sun is directly overhead. There are no shadows and the Incas believed the stone was tied to the sun. Intihuatana stones were important stones, and when destroyed, were thought to lose the godliness as the gods departed. This stone at Machu Picchu remains intact and many believe is still sacred.
