The Incas used every bit of available ground. The agricultural terraces were watered from natural sources and were separated from other sectors by a wide staircase.
In addition to the plentiful rainfall, a spring located about a half-mile provided water for the city's use. There are 16 fountains throughout the city, and Pachacuti, as befitted his status, had the use of water from the first, and cleanest, fountain.
