There are two Picchus at this renowned archaeological site. Machu Picchu, which means Old Mountain in Quechua, and Huayna Picchu, which means Young Mountain.

Many visitors like to climb up Huayna to look down on the ruins, as seen here.

When he arrived, Hiram Bingham thought he had found Vilcabamba, the city that the Incas retreated to, but instead, he had passed by it on his way here. The ruins of Vilcabamba were so buried in rain forest growth that he missed seeing the huge stone structures underneath the vegetation.

Maintenance workers daily cut back the growth at Machu Picchu, else in no time it would be lost again to the rain forest.
