Get an early start for the steepest part of the climb to First Pass, Abra de Huarmihuanasca, also called Warmiwanuqa or Dead Woman Pass at 4200 m. (13,860 ft). Climb this at your own pace. I found this to be the hardest part and it was difficult to take in enough oxygen. I thought I was in good shape, but at this point I was puffing like a steam engine and glad of the chance to sit down, relax for a bit to enjoy the scenery and take some great photos.

You look down at deep river gorges and up at snow-clad mountain peaks. There are moments when you may be the only person on the trail and yet feel as though there are other beings there with you. You may feel a spirituality of place, an intense awareness of time and place.
