The Urubamba river runs from the high Andean ranges down through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, past Machu Picchu and into the jungle.
Along the way, the river provides not only water for the farms and the hydroelectrical plant, but rapids for rafting. The Cusipata area on the upper river has class IIl rapids, while at Chuquicahuana, there are III and IV class rapids. One or two day tours are available from Cuzco.
