After an enforced overnight stay at Petrohué in the Lake District, the remaining eight teams leave at staggered times, heading back to Puerto Montt, past Osorno volcano, to the airport and their next destination: Punta Arenas in Chilean Patagonia. See map.

Punta Arenas is the main seaport for the region of Magallanes. A duty free port, it is a busy center for fishing, commerce, Antarctic research, wool, oil and tourism.

Magallanes is named for Ferdinand Magellan, the Spanish explorer who discovered the Strait of Magellan and named the calmer waters he found on the west side, Pacific. Ferdinand Magellan's Voyage Round the World, 1519-1522 CE.
